Tesla Roadster Demo Delayed to August, SpaceX Thruster Package Still in Development

Another Delay for the Ultimate Halo Car

Tesla has once again postponed the demonstration event for its next-generation Roadster, pushing the date from June to August 2026. Originally announced in 2017 with a 2020 production target, the second-generation Roadster has become one of the most delayed vehicles in modern automotive history. The latest delay is attributed to ongoing development and certification challenges with the optional SpaceX thruster package.

The SpaceX package — a cold-gas thruster system using compressed air tanks developed with technology from SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket — is designed to dramatically improve acceleration, braking, and cornering performance. Elon Musk has previously claimed the thruster-equipped Roadster could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under one second, a figure that would make it the fastest-accelerating production car ever built by a wide margin.

Certification Hurdles

Integrating high-pressure gas thrusters into a road-legal vehicle presents unprecedented regulatory challenges. The system must meet crash safety standards for pressurized vessels, pass electromagnetic compatibility testing to ensure the thruster controls don’t interfere with other vehicle systems, and comply with noise regulations in multiple jurisdictions. Tesla engineers are reportedly working with regulatory bodies in both the United States and Europe to develop certification pathways for what is essentially a first-of-its-kind automotive propulsion system.

Sources indicate that Tesla may offer the base Roadster without the thruster package initially, with the SpaceX option becoming available later as a post-delivery retrofit. The base model is expected to deliver 0-60 mph in approximately 1.9 seconds using a tri-motor electric powertrain alone, with a claimed top speed exceeding 250 mph and a range of over 620 miles on a single charge.

Strategic Importance for Tesla

The Roadster occupies a unique position in Tesla’s lineup. Unlike the volume-focused Model 3 and Model Y, the Roadster is a halo car — a low-volume, high-price vehicle designed to generate excitement and showcase technological capability. With Tesla’s brand perception facing headwinds from increased competition and CEO controversies, a successful Roadster launch could reinvigorate the company’s reputation as an innovation leader.

However, repeated delays also risk turning the Roadster into a symbol of overpromising. First unveiled as a concept in November 2017, the vehicle has now been in development for nearly nine years. Rivian, Lucid, and Porsche all now offer electric performance vehicles that compete with the Roadster’s original positioning, though none match the claimed specifications of the SpaceX thruster package.
