Quick answer: Canada created a 49,000-vehicle annual quota for China-origin EVs at a 6.1% tariff and repealed the former 100% surtax on 1 March 2026. That change does not mean a Canadian consumer can automatically order or personally import a BYD. BYDToday did not locate an official Canadian BYD passenger-car price list, dealer locator or confirmed retail launch date as of 21 July 2026.

What changed in Canada in 2026?
| Rule | Confirmed position | Buyer implication |
|---|---|---|
| Annual quota | 49,000 China-origin EVs in the first quota year | Creates controlled import capacity; it does not guarantee retail supply. |
| Tariff | 6.1% for eligible quota imports | The former 100% surtax was repealed, not retained outside the quota. |
| Permit | Shipment-specific permit required | A private buyer cannot treat the headline quota as automatic import permission. |
Does the quota confirm BYD is coming to Canada?
No. The quota is brand-neutral. A normal consumer launch still requires a Canadian-compliant vehicle, an eligible importer, commercial distribution, warranty and parts support, insurance acceptance and published retail terms. No current BYD primary source reviewed by BYDToday supplied Canadian passenger-car prices, a dealer map or a final launch date.
Can an individual import a Chinese-market EV?
Usually not through a simple one-off purchase. Transport Canada says vehicles made and designed for markets other than Canada normally do not meet Canadian requirements. A case-by-case process applies to new Canadian-specification vehicles bought directly from a foreign manufacturer, not an ordinary foreign-dealer purchase. Vehicles more than 15 years old and limited temporary entries have separate rules.
Can a Canada-legal Chinese EV be driven or sold permanently in the U.S.?
Canadian admission does not create U.S. admission. U.S. safety, emissions, customs, connected-vehicle and state registration rules remain separate. Read the North American policy guide and the transaction-specific Mexico-to-U.S. BYD import guide before treating a border crossing as a permanent import route.
Frequently asked questions
Can Canadians buy a BYD passenger car right now?
No official Canadian BYD passenger-car retail channel, price list or dealer locator was found as of 21 July 2026.
Is Canada’s 100% surtax still in force?
No. Official Canadian sources say it was repealed effective 1 March 2026 when the quota framework began.
Does a 6.1% tariff make a foreign-market car Canadian-compliant?
No. Tariff treatment is separate from Transport Canada safety compliance, import permits, provincial registration, insurance and warranty support.
