In a historic milestone for Chinese automotive exports, the BYD Dolphin Mini outsold every gasoline and electric competitor in Brazil’s retail market in February, signaling a permanent shift in Latin America’s auto landscape.
Brazil sales figures are based on BestSellingCarsBlog Brazil February 2026 sales data and BYD Brazil/Autoesporte reporting.
A Historic First for Chinese Automobiles
The BYD Dolphin Mini achieved a milestone in February 2026: it became the first Chinese vehicle — and the first electric vehicle — to top Brazil’s retail sales chart, with 4,094 units registered according to Fenabrave. The Dolphin Mini outsold the Volkswagen Tera and the Fiat Strada, two models that have long dominated Latin America’s largest automotive market.
According to BBC Brazil, BYD’s pure electric vehicles captured a remarkable 78% share of Brazil’s EV market in February. Chinese brands collectively held 77.6% of the country’s pure electric vehicle segment.
The Economics Driving the Shift
The rapid adoption of Chinese EVs in Brazil is driven by structural economic factors and product competitiveness. Global oil price volatility has made fuel costs an increasingly painful expense for Brazilian consumers, and the total cost of ownership advantage of electric vehicles has become significant.
BBC Brazil noted that Chinese vehicles offer not only more competitive pricing but also superior interior space and intelligent features that align with Latin American consumer preferences.
Latin America as the Next Battleground
Latin America is emerging as the next major battleground in the global EV market, and Chinese automakers appear to have a decisive early lead. Industry analysts predict that Chinese brands could capture over 80% of Latin America’s EV market within three years.
For Chinese automakers, Latin America represents a relatively open market with fewer protectionist barriers. BYD’s strategy of local manufacturing — building factories in Brazil, Thailand, Hungary, and Indonesia — is designed to preempt protectionist concerns by creating local jobs alongside market share gains.
