From aviation-grade condensed batteries in passenger cars to sodium-ion mass production, CATL’s latest announcements redefine what electric vehicle batteries can achieve across every segment.
This follow-up angle is based on CATL’s official Tech Day innovation release and reporting on its swap-and-supercharge network.
Five Batteries, One Philosophy
At its 2026 Super Tech Day in Beijing on April 21, CATL unveiled five new battery products spanning the entire mobility spectrum: the third-generation Shenxing super-fast-charging battery, third-generation Qilin battery, Qilin condensed-state battery, second-generation Xiaoyao super range-extended battery, and Naxin sodium-ion battery.
CATL Chief Scientist Wu Kai made a pointed assessment: LFP has approached its theoretical energy density ceiling. Ternary materials remain the core battleground. Sodium-ion batteries will find their sweet spot in high-temperature environments and energy storage.
Performance Numbers That Rewrite Expectations
The third-generation Shenxing battery delivers 10% to 80% charge in 3 minutes and 44 seconds, with peak capability of 15C charging. At -30°C, a 20-98% charge takes approximately 9 minutes. The third-generation Qilin achieves 280 Wh/kg enabling 1,000 km range with a 625 kg pack. The condensed-state Qilin delivers 350 Wh/kg for 1,500 km range.
The Naxin sodium battery — expected to begin mass production by end of 2026 — represents the culmination of work overcoming four major industrialization challenges.
The Super-Swap Ecosystem
Beyond batteries, CATL outlined its vision for an integrated super-swap network. The company plans to build 4,000 super-swap stations by end of 2026, covering approximately 190 cities. By 2028, the target expands to over 100,000 shared infrastructure points.
The economics are compelling: shared transformer equipment reduces electrical losses by over 13%, and per-parking-space service efficiency is three times higher than traditional charging stations. CATL Chairman Robin Zeng emphasized that innovation quality and brand credibility drive Chinese technology going global.
