Hesai Enters Mercedes-Benz L3 Supply Chain

The world’s largest lidar maker just won its most prestigious contract — and a second 1-million-unit European order suggests this is the beginning of a supply chain revolution.

The Mercedes-Benz L3 supplier win is based on Hesai’s official supplier announcement, with CnEVPost and Edgen used for financial and shipment context.

Hesai Becomes Mercedes-Benz L3 Lidar Supplier: Chinese Sensor Giant Enters the G

Mercedes-Benz Chooses Hesai for L3 Autonomy

On May 19, 2026, Hesai Technology announced it had signed a supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz to become the German automaker’s strategic lidar partner for L3-level autonomous driving vehicles. The deal covers Mercedes-Benz models in both European and Chinese markets, with production handled by Hesai’s newly completed “Galileo” manufacturing center in Thailand.

Just one day later, Hesai announced a second major deal: a European automaker had designated Hesai as a tier-one supplier for over 1 million lidar units across more than ten models under the OEM’s Chinese joint venture brands. Back-to-back contracts with two European giants signal that Hesai has moved from “Chinese champion” to “global mainstream supplier.”

Financial Momentum: Four Consecutive Profitable Quarters

Hesai’s Q1 2026 financials reinforce the strategic narrative. Revenue reached 680 million RMB (about $94 million) (+29.6% YoY), marking the eighth consecutive quarter of major year-over-year growth. GAAP net income was 18.3 million RMB — the fourth straight quarter of profitability — while non-GAAP net income hit 47.7 million RMB (+452.9% YoY).

The company also unveiled its next-generation technology: the “Picasso” SPAD-SoC, the world’s first 6D full-color lidar ultra-sensing chip. This represents a strategic evolution from “spatial perception” to “spatial intelligence,” positioning Hesai not just as a sensor maker but as an AI perception platform company.

Why Lidar Matters: The Camera-Only Debate Heats Up

Hesai’s Mercedes deal arrives at a pivotal moment in the sensor architecture debate. Tesla’s FSD Supervised just launched in China using a camera-only approach, while virtually every Chinese premium EV brand has adopted lidar-augmented perception. Mercedes-Benz’s choice of lidar for L3 effectively endorses the sensor-fusion camp.

For global automakers, the message is increasingly clear: if Mercedes-Benz trusts Chinese lidar for its most safety-critical driving system, the technology has reached automotive-grade maturity. Hesai’s Thailand production facility also addresses geopolitical concerns, creating a “China-designed, ASEAN-manufactured” model that could become a template for other Chinese suppliers seeking global contracts.
