BYD Blade Battery Upgrade Brings 5-Minute Charging

BYD’s March 2026 technology launch delivered the world’s fastest production car charging speed, and a 20,000-station flash charging network to support it.

From Hours to Minutes

On March 5, 2026, BYD hosted its ‘Flash Charge China, Change the World’ event at the Shenzhen Universiade Center, unveiling its second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging technology. A vehicle equipped with the new battery can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in only 9 minutes. Even at minus 30 degrees Celsius, the same charge cycle takes only 3 minutes longer than at room temperature.

The Denza Z9GT equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery delivers a CLTC-rated range of 1,036 kilometers. The battery’s energy density has improved by more than 5% compared to the first-generation Blade Battery, while its thermal management system operates across the full temperature spectrum.

The 20,000-Station Charging Bet

BYD has committed to building 20,000 flash charging stations by the end of 2026, including 18,000 ‘mid-city’ stations and 2,000 highway flash charging stations placed at roughly 100km intervals. By May 14, 2026, BYD had already completed 5,979 stations across 312 cities, putting the company firmly on track for its year-end target.

The charging hardware is equally impressive. BYD’s flash charging pile delivers a peak output of 1,500 kW per single gun, the world’s highest power output for a production charging station. To overcome grid capacity constraints, BYD pairs these stations with a proprietary super-fast discharge energy storage system.

Global Rollout Ambition

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu has framed the flash charging network as a pillar of BYD’s global strategy. Overseas deployment is planned to begin at scale by the end of 2026, starting with Southeast Asia, Europe, and Australia, launching the transition from ‘Flash Charge China’ to ‘Flash Charge Planet.’

As the global EV industry converges on the question of charging speed as the primary consumer barrier to adoption, BYD has answered with a solution that makes fast charging as quick as a fuel stop. If the technology delivers on its specifications at scale, it could accelerate the EV transition not just in China, but worldwide.
