BYD Launches Flash Charging Network in Europe, 3,000 Stations Planned

BYD has officially begun deploying its Flash Charging 2.0 network across Europe, marking a major step in the company’s strategy to integrate ultra-fast charging infrastructure with its vehicle sales expansion. The rollout follows the Denza Z9 GT European premiere in Paris on April 9, 2026, and coincides with Denza’s Hamburg store opening in June 2026.

Network Scale and Timeline

BYD plans to install 6,000 Flash Charging stations outside China within the next 12 months, with 3,000 stations targeted for Europe alone, according to reporting by EVChargingStations.com and Carscoops. The initial rollout focuses on five key markets: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The first operational Flash Charging station in Europe opened in France on April 8, 2026, supporting the Denza Z9 GT equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. BYD’s China-built flash charging network already counts over 5,000 stations across 297 cities as of April 1, 2026.

Charging Performance

Flash Charging 2.0 delivers up to 1,500 kW of power through a single connector in the Chinese market. Under optimal conditions, the system charges from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, adding approximately 400 km of range. Even at -30°C, the system completes a 20% to 97% charge in 12 minutes.

In Europe, Denza vehicles are equipped with CCS2 charging interfaces. While the full 1,500 kW capacity depends on local grid conditions and connector specifications, the rollout represents the highest-power public charging deployment planned on the continent.

Denza Z9 GT: The Flash Charging Flagship

The Denza Z9 GT — BYD’s premium shooting-brake GT — is the first model to support Flash Charging in Europe. Key specifications include:

  • BEV version: 122.49 kWh Blade Battery 2.0, 850 kW tri-motor AWD, 0–100 km/h in 2.7s, WLTP range up to 600 km
  • PHEV version: 63.82 kWh Blade Battery 2.0, WLTP electric range 203 km, total range 805 km
  • Price in Europe: approximately €115,000 (around $125,000), positioning it against the entry-level Porsche Taycan

Germany Expansion: Retail and Charging

BYD’s Germany expansion is proceeding on two fronts. Denza’s Hamburg store opened in June 2026, joining BYD’s existing German retail network. BYD plans to establish approximately 40 Denza stores across Germany by the end of 2026, with a total of eight Denza models available in Europe by the end of 2027.

According to BYD’s official WeChat account, the company’s first Flash Charging station in Germany began operations in May 2026, though specific location details have not been publicly disclosed by BYD’s European press office.

Market Context: BYD’s European Momentum

BYD’s infrastructure investment follows the company’s explosive European growth. In the first four months of 2026, BYD sold more than 120,000 vehicles in Europe, compared to just over 1,000 vehicles for the full year of 2021. The brand has taken the top position in pure-electric sales in the UK, outselling Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen in several segments.

By year-end 2026, BYD plans to operate more than 2,000 retail stores across Europe, including approximately 120 locations in Germany. The Flash Charging network rollout is designed to remove charging anxiety as a barrier to adoption, particularly for long-range EV travel across European markets.

Technology: Blade Battery 2.0 and Standardization

Flash Charging 2.0 is built on BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery platform, which uses a standardized physical housing (“One Shell”) that accommodates both lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells. This “One Shell, Two Cells” architecture allows future battery upgrades without redesigning vehicle chassis or thermal management systems.

Each Flash Charging station incorporates an integrated energy storage system to buffer against grid capacity constraints, enabling ultra-fast charging even at sites where the local grid cannot directly supply 1,500 kW.

Outlook

BYD’s European Flash Charging rollout represents the first time a Chinese EV manufacturer has deployed a proprietary, ultra-high-power charging network internationally at scale. The 3,000-station European target, if achieved within 12 months, would make BYD one of the continent’s largest operators of public fast-charging infrastructure — ahead of many established charging networks.

For European consumers, the arrival of Flash Charging removes one of the last practical advantages of internal combustion vehicles: refueling time. As BYD integrates charging infrastructure with its retail expansion, the company is building an end-to-end ownership ecosystem that few competitors can match.
