Denza Z: 1,000+ HP EV Convertible Set for Goodwood Global Launch

Denza, BYD’s premium sub-brand, is preparing to launch the Z — a 1,000+ horsepower electric convertible that will make its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2026. The Z represents Denza’s most ambitious product yet and marks a strategic shift: the brand will prioritize international markets before bringing the car home to China.

The Denza Z was first unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show and has since been spotted on Chinese roads with only minimal camouflage. Three versions are planned: a convertible, a hardtop coupe, and a track-focused edition — each targeting the enthusiast segment rather than mass volume.

Performance and Technology

At the heart of the Denza Z lies BYD’s e³ (Yi San Fang) tri-motor vehicle control platform, delivering a combined output exceeding 1,000 horsepower. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes approximately 2 seconds, placing it among the fastest production cars on the market. The platform enables independent torque vectoring across all three motors, giving the Z dynamic capabilities that go beyond raw straight-line speed.

The Z also features Disus-M magnetorheological (MR) active suspension with real-time road surface sensing, adapting damper stiffness within milliseconds. God’s Eye (DiPilot) 5.0 advanced driver assistance comes standard, adding a suite of highway and urban driving aids to what is otherwise a driver-focused machine. According to CarNewsChina’s sighting report, the vehicle features functional hood ducts — a detail that underscores its track-oriented engineering.

International-First Strategy

In a departure from the typical Chinese-brand playbook, Denza will prioritize international markets at launch. The Z will appear first at Goodwood in July, with the Chinese domestic market receiving it at a later date. This approach signals BYD’s growing confidence in the global appeal of its premium products and its willingness to challenge established convertible brands on their home turf.

Known color options include black, blue, and a distinctive “Fei Leng Cui” emerald green — the latter referencing the famous Chinese jade color and signaling the car’s cultural identity even as it targets a global audience.

Market Context and Risks

The Denza Z enters a nascent but growing Chinese pure-electric sports car segment. Competitors include BYD’s own Fang Cheng Bao Formula X, the MG Cyberster, and the SSC SC-01 backed by Xiaomi. Industry analysts expect these cars will serve as enthusiast toys or brand flagships rather than direct competitors.

Denza’s domestic sales have been under significant pressure in 2026, with year-on-year monthly declines of 30-50%. April 2026 deliveries barely cleared the 10,000-unit mark at 10,638 units, per CPCA data. The Z is unlikely to move the sales needle in volume terms, but it serves as a powerful halo product to re-energize the brand.

BYD’s previous convertible experiment — the 2009 S8 — was a commercial disaster, with an estimated total of only 103 cars sold. The Z is a completely different proposition in technology, performance, and brand positioning, but the historical comparison will be inevitable.
